Storage capacity is what the bin holds filled to the eave. Dry capacity is the lower figure you get when the bin is set up for drying, since you need room for air movement above the grain. Both figures are calculated at 1.24 cubic feet per bushel with 5 percent compaction.

How to Read the Two Capacity Numbers

Every bin has two figures and they are not the same thing. Storage capacity is what the bin holds filled up to the eave — that is the number you want if you are putting away dry grain and leaving it. Dry capacity is the smaller figure, and it is what you go by if the bin is set up with a drying floor, because you have to leave room above the grain for air to move.

If you are not sure which one applies to you, go by dry capacity. You would rather have a bin with room left over than one that comes up short in a wet year.

A Word on Sizing Up

Most of the folks we talk to end up buying one size bigger than the number they walked in with. Harvest does not always cooperate, yields come in better than expected, and a bin that is exactly the right size on paper is a headache in the field. If you are between two sizes, take the bigger one. It costs less to put up capacity once than to come back and add a second bin site two years later.
